“We are very happy with the progress that he is now making,” Zuma said.

Mandela, the nation’s first black leader, was elected to office in 1994 and served five years in office. He spent 27 years in prison, mostly on Robben Island, for his opposition to white-minority rule known as apartheid.

Mandela contracted tuberculosis while on Robben Island and has been treated for lung infections since. He had gall stones removed this year and was admitted to treat pneumonia as well earlier this year. This is his fourth stay in the hospital since December.
