El Celler de Can Roca topped the Restaurant magazine’s annual poll of top eating houses.
Run by three brothers the restaurant opened in 1986 specialising in Catalan cuisine.
Joan Roca, the head chef at El Celler de Can Roca, puts the success down to his family: “The key is work. The work, the commitment to creativity and, above all, the luck of having two brothers who are true stars – the best wine man in the world and the best pastry chef in the world – and with them it was possible to build a project that has allowed us to get to this point. So the secret is work, commitment to excellence and creativity, and luck in having two amazing brothers.”
The family has dethroned the Danish restaurant Norma, which has been top of the culinary heap for the last three years.
Norma chef René Redzepi praised the work of the brothers three: “These guys are innovators. They should have won this 10 years ago It’s overdue that these guys have the prize and to see a family like that, a second generation, you can only honour and be happy for them.”
The restaurant is known for its fusion of innovative cooking techniques and traditional Catalan fare.
