For the first time in the Miss South Africa history, the reigning queen was not on hand to crown the new queen. Melinda Bam, Miss South Africa 2011 was unable to be at the pageant because she is currently in Las Vegas preparing to compete for Miss Universe 2012. Marylin was crowned by the 2011 runner-up Remona Moodley.
“I feel that the youth has a lot to learn from the elderly, and the seniors deserve the affection, compassion and respect of the youth,” Marylin said during her speech after the pageant. “I intend to encourage young people to volunteer at old-age homes. I will achieve this by hosting workshops, motivational speeches and charity events. I will encourage the youth to visit retirement homes and hospice centers across the country.”
